During the summer of 2005, my friend Charlie Oriez asked that I consider running for the Executive Committee of the Sierra Club's Rocky Mountain Chapter. Although I was reluctant to run, I thought I would provide a bio and campaign statement that best reflected my thoughts about the Sierra Club and environmentalism at that time. All of the candidates' statements were made available to the entire membership prior to the fall 2005 election, here's mine: The Earth, and the life that it harbors, is more special and precious than anything we can ever invent or imagine. We are environmentalists because we care, deeply, and have banded together to make things better – to repair, heal, and nurture these dying lands and haggard species. It is imperative that all of us keep working together to protect the natural world around us – the Earth is the most precious of gifts and cannot be abandoned for profit, greed, or simple indifference. Yet, despite our heartfelt caring, the accelerating rate of destruction, loss, and damage continues unabated. I, myself, have been a Sierra Club volunteer for over 17 years and hope you’ll support me in this election, in this most import cause... - Roger J. Wendell
